Description

Oxford Almanack for 1804

The view is dominated by the Temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock

This decisive battle of 24 February involved the capture of King Francis I of France (left of centre) and led to the establishment of the Emperor Charles V in Lombardy

He occasionally repeated a composition and often reuses the same objects in a new arrangement

This painting has been dated to the 1640s

The Birdcage Ruskin Oxford Almanack for 1804Tonks developed a personal kind of Impressionism under the influence of Wilson Steer and it is seen to best advantage in his genre paintings before the First World War. The model in this painting was Ethel N. Burford (1883 1944), who sat to Tonks and many other artists. It was exhibited at the New English Art Club in 1907.
